Но на новогодних каникулах желающих было столько (особенно китайцев), что, похоже, весь экипаж ледокола переквалифицировался в гиды, и экскурсии проходили с интервалом минут в 15 (т. е. одновременно на корабле находилось четыре группы), к тому же еще и после времени официального окончания работы музея. Так что, постояв пару часиков в очереди, мы таки попали на ледокол. В столовую не мог поместиться одновременно весь экипаж (точнее, весь экипаж и не должен одновременно находиться в столовой — кто-то должен следить за реактором, кто-то управлять судном, кто-то быть на связи и т. д.), поэтому питание происходило в несколько смен. После двух аварий их решили заменить на реакторы второго поколения ОК-900, более надежные и почти в два раза более мощные. Операция по замене была уникальной. Поскольку после двух аварий реакторный отсек был несколько загрязнен радиацией, то решили избавиться и от него тоже. Понятное дело, что руками вынести 3700 тонн фонящего металла нереально, поэтому придумали хитрый ход — ледокол подогнали к какой-то морской впадине в районе Новой земли, вырезали реакторный отсек, прикрепив его временными креплениями к остальному кораблю, в днище ледокола вырезали дыру под реакторным отсеком, одновременно подорвали все крепления и отсек ушел на дно морское.
