Расположена на берегу Великой гавани. Если коротко, то османский султан Сулейман I, известный так же под кличкой Великолепный, решил прибрать архипелаг к рукам, ибо он весьма симпатично расположен со стратегической точки зрения. Так что 18 мая 1565 года 40-тысячная турецкая армия, на более чем 200 судах, подгребла к побережью Мальты. Поэтому турки высадились немного в стороне и решили уничтожить форты с суши. И 23 мая начали обстреливать из пушек Форт Святого Эльма. Форт продержался месяц, после чего был разрушен во время турецкой атаки. В июле была предпринята попытка штурма с моря, а в августе был генеральный штурм. Форт выстоял, а от турецкой армии осталась лишь четверть от первоначального количества солдат. А 7 сентября к мальтийским рыцарям прибыло подкрепление с Сицилии, в количестве 9000 человек. Так что турки сообразили, что ежели они немедленно не угребут на свою историческую родину, то вскоре угребать будет некому. На том Великая осада и закончилась."}], "attributes": []}, {"text": [{"type": "string", "attributes": {}, "string": "Поскольку в результате сей заварушки мальтийцам тоже не слабо досталось (не так как туркам, но все таки минус 10 000 человек, минус Форт Святого Эльма, минус город Биргу), то тогдашний Великий магистр Мальтийского Ордена Жан де Ла Валлетт прикинул, что форты, конечно, штука хорошая, но еще лучше будет соорудить рядом с ними хорошо укрепленный город. И уже 28 марта 1566 года лично заложил первый камень нового города, который впоследствии был назван в честь магистра."}], "attributes": []}, {"text": [{"type": "string", "attributes": {}, "string": "Добраться до Валлетты из любой точки острова можно на автобусе, т. к. у них там гнездо, в смысле, центральный терминал. Вон пасутся вокруг фонтана. Ну и припарковаться на сколько хочешь. 10 лет назад приехать все еще можно было, но парковаться только на 2-3 часа. А теперь въезд посторонним вообще запрещен, только местные могут проехать. Да и вообще, многие улицы стали чисто пешеходными.
