Но через 10 лет он был передан Академии Наук СССР, переоборудован в судно космической связи и назван в честь космонавта Виктора Ивановича Пацаева. Школа, институт, потом работа в Гидрометслужбе СССР в качестве конструктора приборов для метеорологических ракет. В 1958 году мечта наконец-то сбылась — перешел на работу в КБ Королева. После полета Гагарина решил, что ему тоже всенепременнейше надо слетать в космос. После нескольких попыток, в 1968 году был принят в отряд космонавтов в качестве гражданского специалиста (напомню, что абсолютное большинство советских космонавтов были военными летчиками). Несколько лет провел в качестве дублера других космонавтов, но в 1971 году сбылась и вторая мечта — вместе с Георгием Добровольским и Владиславом Волковым вошел в состав экипажа корабля «Союз-11», на котором они полетели на орбитальную станцию «Салют-1». К слову сказать, спускаемый аппарат первых Союзов был рассчитан на одного человека, но руководство страны решило, что в одиночку космонавтам летать скучно, так что надо бы запускать сразу по трое. Но три человека в скафандрах никак не помещались в спускаемый аппарат, поэтому было решено, что космонавты будут отправляться на Землю без них. В общем-то, это и стало причиной гибели экипажа при разгерметизации аппарата во время спуска. После приземления врачи пытались реанимировать космонавтов, но безуспешно.
